Costco Customers Order The Chocolate Cake With This One Adjustment For A Massive Flavor Boost
Costco is known for its oversized portions of, well, pretty much everything, from its two one-gallon packs of milk to the 56-ounce packs of Italian sausage to the family-sized pre-made meals that everyone is obsessed with. Even its bakery sells oversized or more densely packaged versions of rolls, bread, bagels, and especially sweet treats, like cookies, muffins, and cakes. The cakes in particular are highly regarded online, and if there is one thing you need to know about them, it's that they will feed a crowd. Costco's cakes are also customizable at the time of ordering, and some enterprising customers have discovered an adjustment that gives the chocolate sheet cake a major boost in flavor: swapping out the chocolate cheesecake mousse filling for vanilla.
"Like a gigantic, delicious Hostess Suzy Q," one commenter on a Reddit thread devoted to this swap said (we can almost hear their mouth watering through the internet). Another Costco customer wrote that the employee at their bakery suggested they do this for their daughter's birthday cake, and the results were so, so good. "Rave reviews from the party guests," they declared.
If you can find a Costco bakery to pull off this feat of cake deliciousness (more on that later), it stands to reason you could also request the inverse. If you're not a huge fan of chocolate cake (or you're serving those that aren't), but you do enjoy chocolate mousse filling, you have options!
How to order these types of custom Costco cakes
It seems that you used to be able to order this opposite-flavor combination cake on the actual order form at the Costco bakery, but that is no longer the case. In fact, you might not be able to get a chocolate cake with vanilla cheesecake mousse filling (or vice versa) at all if your bakery doesn't allow for this customization, which some very likely might not. So how can you be sure? While there are no direct phone lines to the individual bakeries, you could try calling the store and requesting that someone ask the bakery on your behalf.
If you have received a response in the affirmative (or perhaps, you know others who have already obtained cakes like these from your location), it's also in your best interest to place the order at least a week ahead of when you'll need it, to give the bakery plenty of time to make the necessary adjustments. If you're making the cake arrangements the old-fashioned, and frankly outdated, way in-store on the form, where it reads, "Filled with 2 lbs. X mousse," you can just cross out the flavor of mousse you don't want, and write in the flavor you do want.
If you're taking advantage of Costco's new cake ordering upgrade on its app, however, you might instead include a message about the desired swap in the Notes section at the end of the form. It's just important to remember that whichever way you choose, it's of tantamount importance that you include your phone number, so the bakery can reach out to confirm details if needed.
