Forget The McDonald's Egg McMuffin: The Spicier Option With Meaty Flavor

McDonald's Egg McMuffin helped put the chain's breakfast on the map, and while it remains one of the fast food joint's biggest sellers, it has since been joined by a pretty terrific supporting cast of fellow menu items. For example, the (surprisingly unseasoned) hash browns are a crispy and craveable addition to the lineup. But while the Egg McMuffin can certainly be meat-heavy (especially if you order it Swedish-style), another item brings plenty of meaty flavor to the table, along with a spicy element, too. Have you guessed it? It's the Sausage Burrito.

The Sausage Burrito features a soft tortilla, which encloses little nubs of pork sausage, pillowy scrambled eggs, melted cheese, and a mixture of tomatoes, onions, and green chiles, the latter of which are mostly mild but give the breakfast item just a kiss of spice. The burrito — which sells for $1.79 (price varies by location) — also comes with your choice of mild picante sauce or a hotter version if you like more heat.

One Reddit user said they've given "fancier" breakfast burritos a shot before, but "McDonald's with the small, dinky little burritos are still the best." It's a sentiment that is echoed around the internet, with fans declaring that while they aren't much to look at, they nonetheless fill a little burrito-sized hole in their hearts.

Why you might order a Sausage Burrito instead of a McMuffin

Not to pit two delicious McDonald's breakfast options against each other, but there are a few reasons why you might opt for a Sausage Burrito over a McMuffin. The first is that, if wrapped properly, burritos are much easier to eat on the go, including in your car, thanks to the fact that everything is contained inside the tortilla (versus the McMuffin, in which everything is layered and could slip around and possibly out of the English muffin). "Just ate two [of the burritos] on a road trip, loved 'em," one Redditor enthused. If you love spice, another user joked that "the rule is half a packet of picante per bite."

Another reason you might order the Sausage Burrito from McDonald's is if you have a taste for something with a bit more depth than your average breakfast sandwich. There's a symphony of flavors involved in the burrito, and aside from the slight spice of the filling, there are actually quite a few elements that go into these little tubes. The aforementioned green chiles and onions add a mild kick and savory depth, while the tomatoes (a known umami powerhouse) help give the burrito its fresh and surprisingly complex flavor profile.
