If You Like Your McDonald's Egg McMuffin With All The Meats, Order It Swedish-Style
Arby's may have the monopoly on the meats, as its slogan suggests, but McDonald's is no slacker in that area either, with its reliable burger patties and tender chicken products. And that's not even taking into account its breakfast menu, which features glistening, greasy sausage and crisp bacon. Yes, McDonald's breakfast sandwiches, some of which get served up on English muffins from Bimbo Bakeries and Fresh Start Bakeries, are by far some of the most popular menu items, but if meat is your thing, you should know that the burger chain is holding out on American customers. While McDonald's took its Egg McMuffin from good to great in the good ol' US-of-A., in Sweden, it sells a meaty option that's known as a Mighty McMuffin, and while you can't order it by name in the U.S., you can replicate it.
The Mighty McMuffin features not just one breakfast protein, but both a sausage patty and strips of bacon, making it a hearty start to your day. And if that sounds like something you want to fit in your mouth, it's incredibly easy to order Stateside. In the app, you can select a Sausage and Egg McMuffin, then press "Customize." Next, you'll see the header, "Add it on" — press the drop-down menu for 2 Half Strips Bacon. You have the option of adding two or four, for an additional $1.79 or $3.58 (prices depend on location, of course), respectively. Choose how much meat you can handle and hit Save Changes. Skål!
Wait, why do Swedish McDonald's have so many more protein options than the U.S.?
It's not just its breakfast sandwiches that feature meatier options than what McDonald's in the U.S. offers its customers. Strange though it may seem for a country whose traditional cuisine leans toward fish, like pickled herring or a salmon dish known as gravlax, it is also a nation known for its meatballs. So we suppose it's not too far off that the largest fast food chain in the world by revenue would sell a variety of protein options to these hungry Swedes. One notable example is the Creamy Chicken Bowl, an actual salad with fresh greens like cabbage and baby spinach, topped with chicken and bacon, cheese, croutons, Caesar dressing, and — get this — capers. At a fast food restaurant!
Swedish McDonald's also sells hot wings, which get fried up in the same vats used for the chicken nuggets, and then tossed in a spicy sauce. And speaking of the Chicken McNuggets, it seems the Swedes get treated to some international delights on their menus, including Garlic & Black Pepper nugs from Japan. Finally, if those menu items don't make you want to riot and demand change at your local McDonald's, the vegetarians among us will be devastated to learn that Swedish customers can order veggie burgers. The McVeggie comes in a basic patty or a spicy one.
