Egg McMuffins, and each of the variants, have been a part of the McDonald's breakfast line-up since it first went national, all the way back in 1977. Since then, loyal customers and fans of the breakfast sandwich have been discovering and sharing hacks, including additions to make it a crispier bite, like adding a hash brown (which is one of Food Republic's five ordering tips for elevating the McMuffin), or ordering the English muffin well-done. But a content creator on TikTok has found a unique way to up the crunch factor on the McMuffin: Ask for it with a Filet-O-Fish patty instead of the typical breakfast protein.

The crispness of the breaded fish patty juxtaposed with the softness of all the other elements — English muffin, egg patty, and cheese — creates an immensely satisfying bite, and hey, you get a full slice of cheese, rather than the half-slice on the Filet-O-Fish sandwich. However, there is one drawback to this crunchy hack, which you can see in the video above: You have to time your order perfectly, and that can have a number of variables, most of which are out of your control, which might ultimately lead to unsuccessful attempts at obtaining this fishy, crunchy breakfast sandwich.

The stars must align to make the Filet-O-Fish breakfast sandwich a reality

The stars really have to align in order for the Filet-O-Fish breakfast sandwich to go from concept to reality because this hack involves both morning and lunchtime ingredients. As you may know, McDonald's lunch typically starts at 10:30 a.m. on weekdays (or 11 a.m. on weekends). So you'll want to hit the sweet spot where breakfast items might still be out and available, but the restaurant is getting ready to turn over to lunch and dinner menu items. That means timing your request a few minutes before 10:30, or up to a few minutes after, as you might for the viral McBrunch burger, or as it's aptly nicknamed, the Mc10:35.

Also, because this is such a special request, you can't do it in the app or at the in-store kiosks because they are going to be set for either breakfast or lunch, not both. Instead, you'll want to speak directly to an employee, first to ask if it can be done at all (please, just accept a refusal graciously — if the employees can't do it, they can't do it, and you can try again on another day, perhaps at a different location). And while you can request the cooks to put the Filet-O-Fish on the breakfast sandwich for you, you might also order the fish sandwich separately from the McMuffin, and assemble the crunchy bite on your own so as not to disrupt the flow of the kitchen any further during what is typically a chaotic shift.
