Culver's is an American fast food restaurant chain founded in Sauk City, Wisconsin, in 1984. What makes it unique is its signature style of hamburger, known as a ButterBurger. It's a variation on a regional specialty made with butter, though the chain does things a little differently by simply buttering and toasting the buns. There are around 11 different standard toppings you can choose from to add to your ButterBurger. Some may incur an additional charge, but there is one free topping that will give any burger exponentially more flavor: grilled onions!

You'll find this topping already included on the iconic Wisconsin Swiss Melt, and it is one of the reasons why this sandwich is so delicious. While grilling, the onions turn golden brown and become slightly charred without disintegrating into what you may know as caramelized onions. It's kind of the best of both worlds: the crisp bite of a raw onion without the sharpness, and the sweet flavor of the caramelized allium. The reason it works so well on any burger, and not just Culver's melts, is that both the onions and the beef go through the Maillard reaction, which is responsible for browning the burger patties and grilled onions, concentrating their savory flavors, and deepening them.

As such, they both mirror each other's flavors while also complementing them — the sugars from the onions elevate the savoriness of the beef, while the beef prevents the onions' sweetness from making your ButterBurger taste like dessert. Just remember that this topping isn't included when you order The Works or a Culver's Deluxe, so you'll have to ask for it.

Great service and custom options elevate the Culver's menu

Besides its ButterBurgers, Culver's is also known for its outstanding service, and staff members are trained to help customers fulfill their fast food desires, including dressing their burgers exactly how they want them. Coupled with the chain's ample and diverse menu, this means there are many ways to customize your order, from the simplest requests to those that may require some creativity and cooperation from the staff. Perhaps two of the easiest upgrades you can make to your ButterBurger involve ordering some of the restaurant's signature sauces.

Its Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese Sauce, for instance, is a far cry from the nacho cheese sauce you might pump onto a gas station hot dog and tastes more like a Mornay sauce. You can also add some of George's Chili to create a chili cheeseburger. A side of brown gravy is another great option, and you can order an extra-large portion to enjoy a burger reminiscent of a French dip sandwich. If you want to take your burger to Montreal, order Wisconsin Cheese Curds, fries, and brown gravy to create a poutine-inspired burger.

You can also use the poutine and chili cheese tips to dress up fries or onion rings, but there are so many more things you can create at Culver's. You can elevate the chain's pot roast sandwich, for example, by requesting additional sauces or swapping out the bun, and there are at least 10 ways you can upgrade its seafood dishes, too. All you have to do is ask and be as polite to the staff as they are famously polite to you and every other customer who walks through the doors.
