'90s Cracker Barrel Servers And Customers Alike Will Remember This Discontinued Steak Dinner
Cracker Barrel is renowned for its traditional Southern food, with comforting favorites like Chicken Fried Chicken and its best-selling pancakes. Of course, the menu has changed over the years the chain has been in business, with discontinued menu items like haddock, a French dip sandwich, and even sweet potato pancakes remembered fondly. But there was also a ribeye dinner, available from the 1990s until the 2010s, that servers and customers alike recall with nostalgia (and hunger).
On a Reddit thread, a user commented, "You can call me a liar but one of the best steaks [I] ever had at a restaurant was from Cracker Barrel." They went on to say that when they conveyed their admiration to the server, they were met with a touch of skepticism. But, they insisted, it was really that good.
In a Facebook post, one person said the ribeyes Cracker Barrel served were USDA Choice (the second-highest grade), and "aged 28 days to enhance ... tenderness and flavor." Another Redditor also had fond memories of the ribeye, and they gave further insight into why that beef was so tasty: Apparently, Cracker Barrel cooked them on a charbroiler, which imparts not only satisfying grill marks, but also a deep, smoky flavor.
Fans embrace Cracker Barrel's shift to New York strip
Cracker Barrel has done its fans plenty of solids over the years, bringing back the popular Hamburger Steak, as well as Eggs in the Basket, and even the whimsically named Campfire Meals, which are served in tin foil, just like the fireside meals you might cook while camping. If the restaurant can bring back items from nearly three decades ago, surely it could bring back the ribeye steaks? Unfortunately, the chain has opted to go in a different direction beef-wise since taking ribeyes off the menu, turning instead to the short-lived sirloin before focusing on New York strips.
On Facebook, someone posted a picture of their delicious-looking Cracker Barrel New York strip and called it the "best $20 I've spent on dinner in a LONG time." On Reddit, quite a few commenters also piped up. One user said they had Cracker Barrel's New York strip steak several times for breakfast and were "blown away" by the flavor, as well as how perfectly it was cooked. Plenty of Redditors also judged it to be a good piece of meat based on appearances alone.
