When it comes to fast food breakfast sandwiches, McDonald's remains uppermost in many people's minds. And why not? The iconic Egg McMuffin, with its famously round egg patty, has been the cornerstone of the chain's breakfast menu since the 1970s. And while you can sub the Canadian bacon that comes standard on the McMuffin for regular bacon, Wendy's Breakfast Baconator actually takes the pork product to a whole new level if that's your sandwich protein preference. And more than that, it ranks as one of the best overall fast food breakfast sandwiches, based on the opinions of the customers who eat them.

Wendy's, which has only served breakfast nationwide on a permanent basis since 2020, is doing the morning meat right with its Breakfast Baconator, which features not only six strips of thick, crispy applewood-smoked bacon, but also a sausage patty — which, like the burgers, comes in a square shape — a freshly cracked egg cooked into a patty (Wendy's is one of the rare fast food chains that use real, whole eggs), two slices of American cheese, and a Swiss cheese sauce. Then, everything gets piled onto not a breakfast bread, like a bagel or English muffin, but a potato roll, which is perhaps better suited to hold the hefty fillings. This symphony of flavors and textures led one user on Reddit to call the immensely bacon-forward sandwich "peak fast food breakfast" that "simply just [can't] get any better," a sentiment echoed by plenty of fellow fans.

Easy menu hacks can elevate Wendy's Breakfast Baconator

The Breakfast Baconator is pretty beloved as-is, but there are ways to modify the menu item and make it that much more enjoyable. One Redditor had the idea of actually stuffing more into the sandwich by adding Wendy's seasoned potato wedges and a flavorful sauce, writing that "it'll change your life." We think the Scorchin' Hot sauce would be an especially tasty addition.

Further, if the potato bun is too lunch-y for you, you can swap it out for a breakfast bread — try asking for the Breakfast Baconator on a biscuit. It's a modification that cannot be made on the app or online, so you'll have to verbally request the change when you place your order at the drive-thru or the counter, if your location still offers that option. Of course, if there simply isn't enough of something on the Breakfast Baconator for your tastes, you can add up to four more sausage patties, four more eggs, and extra Swiss cheese sauce.
