McDonald's Customer Swaps The English Muffin For A Crunchier McMuffin Upgrade
If you're a fan of McDonald's Egg McMuffin, a social media influencer has taken to TikTok to show us how the popular breakfast sandwich can become even better with a simple swap (and it's a hackthose who eat gluten-free abroad have done for a hot minute — alas, hash browns in the USA aren't gluten-free). There are various ordering tips that can elevate your McMuffin, and this one involves adding crunch factor by ditching the English muffin slices and sandwiching the creation between two of Mickey D's hash browns instead.

Dubbed "the Hashbrown McMuffin" in the TikTok video, the DIY sandwich is easy to execute. Simply order two of McD's hashbrown patties — hailed as one of the best fast-food breakfast items for under $5 — and place the egg, Canadian bacon, and American cheese (as much as you can pry away from the bottom English muffin, anyway, since it gets pretty melted on) between the two crispy hashbrown patties, sandwich style. That's all you need to do — aside from scarfing down your new and improved crispy breakfast nosh, of course. Armed with your new "bread," you're ready to enjoy.
As for those discarded English muffin pieces, McDonald's toasts the bread product and tops it with real butter, so it has tasty merit on its own. Rather than simply tossing the halves, we recommend getting a packet of McDonald's Honey (it's intended to be used as McNugget dipping sauce, but don't let that stop you) or containers of the chain's Grape Jam or Strawberry Preserves to spread over the muffins for an added accompaniment of makeshift toast to enjoy with your breakfast.
Other ways to add crunch to your Egg McMuffin
You don't, of course, need to omit the English muffins at all. Another easy hack to add extra crunch to your McDonald's McMuffin is to simply place a hash brown patty inside the bread as an extra topping. The contrast of golden-fried, crispy potato and toasty English muffin is actually quite a nice texture contrast, and added to the meltiness of the cheese, the chewiness of the Canadian bacon, and the hot fluffiness of the egg, you've got one dynamite breakfast combo.
Another way to bring added crunch factor to your Egg McMuffin is adding crisp bacon to the sandwich. As part of McDonald's breakfast offerings, you can purchase side orders of it, including getting two half strips of bacon for a nominal charge — the perfect size for adding the crunchy pork to your McMuffin.
Odd as it may sound at first blush, another option can bring not only crunch but a light sweetness to your Egg McMuffin, and you may find that it, surprisingly, adds some perfect flavor notes you didn't even know were missing. This is the chain's Apple Slices, offered as a regular side item or one of the Happy Meal options. Before you say, "No way!" consider the classic pairing that is apples and cheese, long considered a gourmet combination of salty-sweet, crunchy-creamy deliciousness. In truth, pairing apples and cheddar is a match made in sandwich heaven. The mild sweetness of the crisp fruit is actually a scrumptious addition to the melty cheese, savory egg, and salty Canadian bacon, and its juiciness adds a bit of moisture to the dense, dry muffin, bringing some freshness that the popular sandwich lacks.
