The Texas-Style BBQ Burger King Menu Item We Wish We Had In The US
As one of the largest fast food hamburger chains in the United States, Burger King has long cemented itself as fast food royalty thanks to its world-famous Whoppers and iconic flame-grilled (well, technically flame-broiled) patties. With locations spanning more than 120 countries, some menu variations are inevitable. One that really caught our attention comes from South Africa, where Burger King locations play host to the Texas BBQ King burger.
This sandwich is an all-in-one combo of Burger King's best items. It starts with two signature beef patties, layered with cheese, barbecue sauce, and mayonnaise, then finished off with several of the chain's crispy onion rings. There's not a single vegetable in sight; this burger is all about the unapologetically meat-forward, smoky flavors that define an all-American cookout.
If you're even somewhat familiar with Burger King's menu, you've probably noticed the name isn't far off from the U.S.'s very own Texas Whopper. But even a quick glance at their ingredient lists tells two very different stories. The Texas Whopper piles on bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, jalapeños, and yellow mustard, yet it lacks the barbecue sauce that gives the Texas BBQ King that undeniable smokehouse flair.
Despite taking its name from the barbecue-loving state of Texas, South Africa's burger has yet to appear on U.S. menus, but that hasn't stopped it from taking an international journey. In July 2026, it landed on U.K. menus for a limited time, and this version went even harder on the Texas theme. It swapped regular mayonnaise for barbecue mayo and added a medley of iceberg lettuce, crispy onions, sliced onions, and pickles. Here's hoping its next stop is the United States.
Many global Burger King menus feature distinct regional items
Although the Texas BBQ King burger has yet to hit the U.S. market, it's relatively straightforward to customize yourself in-store. Simply order the Rodeo Double Cheeseburger, which comes equipped with American cheese, onion rings, and barbecue sauce. To make it as close as possible to the South African version, simply order it with mayo on the side, then assemble accordingly; it's really that simple!
In some cases, however, the only way to try certain offerings is by purchasing a plane ticket. One such item with no U.S. equivalent is the Steakhouse Angus Gourmet burger, a U.K. offering. The burger is made with 100% British and Irish Angus beef, a breed of cattle prized for its marbling. Its rich flavor and tender texture make it a staple at high-end steakhouses, yet it's rarely seen at fast food joints. That's precisely what makes it stand out on the U.K. menu. Launched in 2021 as part of the chain's "Gourmet Kings" range, the burger was designed to appeal to customers looking for something a bit more elevated. Burger King U.K. is no stranger to premium beef, and in 2025 launched a wagyu burger, complete with an endorsement from chef Gordon Ramsay himself. With such high-quality beef options available, we think the U.S. has some serious catching up to do.
And, of course, no trip to Burger King is complete without sides. While the U.S. may stick to the American classics, some international menus offer different options. In Nigeria, for example, customers can pair their burgers with sweet potato cubes, fried plantain, or yam fries. And if you're not in the mood for a burger at all, you can skip it altogether and order a smoky jollof rice box instead.
