Forget A Classic Burger King Chicken Sandwich – Order It Norwegian-Style

Many of America's biggest fast food chains have locations around the world. Their familiar offerings might have different names in other nations, or there may be menu items that have different components than their American counterparts. McDonald's McMuffin Deluxe in Norway includes a beef patty and veggies, for example, and its Norwegian Filet-o-Fish comes with ketchup, mustard, and what's called McFeast sauce. Similarly, Norwegian Burger Kings serve some of their chicken sandwiches with chili cheese sauce, which you can emulate with a few additions.

Burger King introduced its Original Chicken Sandwich in 1979, 25 years after the chain was founded, and 22 years after the iconic Whopper's debut. The classic long sandwich has a breaded and fried white-meat chicken patty with shredded lettuce and mayo on a toasted sesame seed bun. There have also been specialty versions over the years, including 2026's Loaded Jalapeño Original Chicken Sandwich and Club Original Chicken Sandwich, the latter of which comes with bacon and Swiss cheese.

BK offers two chicken sandwiches with the creamy, spicy sauce in Norway. It tops the Chili Cheese Crispy Chicken along with lettuce, and the Gourmet Chicken Bacon Cheese includes it with bacon, cheese, onions, and pickles. To replicate its flavor, mix the chain's Buffalo dipping sauce with mayonnaise, swap it for the Original's plain mayo, and order the sandwich with cheese, requesting an extra slice. To copy the Gourmet version, also ask to hold the lettuce, and add its other three toppings.

Chili cheese sauce also elevates other Norwegian Burger King items

Chili cheese chicken sandwiches aren't exclusive to Burger King in Norway. The chain offers them in fellow Scandinavian nations Sweden and Denmark, as well as in other countries like Austria, South Africa, and Estonia. The sauce also features in other menu items at the Norwegian locations. It's in a Chili Cheese Wrap with crispy chicken, arugula, and jalapeños. Chili Cheese Fries are one of the sides, and another is deep-fried nuggets filled with the sauce and jalapeño bits, similar to the chain's Jalapeño Cheddar Bites in the U.S.

The sauce is also on a couple of burgers: the Chili Cheese with jalapeños and the X-Long Chili Cheese with three beef patties, extra slices of the spicy peppers, and double cheese. You could recreate one with a single or double cheeseburger using the same Buffalo sauce mixed with mayo and extra American cheese slices, leaving off the pickles, ketchup, and mustard. The chain may only have jalapeños for limited-time sandwiches, depending on your location. If they're not available, just leave them off, or create your own version, perhaps adding lettuce and tomato or customizing a Bacon King (without its ketchup and mayo) instead for extra smoky and salty flavor.

Burger King has grown to more than 100 locations in Norway since the first one opened in Oslo in 1988. One of them is its northernmost restaurant in the world, in the city of Tromsø, about 217 miles above the Arctic Circle.
