For A Juicier Egg McMuffin, Ask For 3 Simple Ingredients

McDonald's Egg McMuffin was a revolutionary inclusion on the chain's menu and launched the restaurant's breakfast lineup. Originally conceived in 1971 as a type of Eggs Benedict sandwich, the item quickly morphed into what we know today as a McMuffin and eventually debuted across all locations in 1975. Since then, the Golden Arches improved this breakfast staple by using real butter on the muffin. The sandwich, which is made with steamed rather than fried eggs, is an icon for a reason, but it can often seem a little plain and certainly not very juicy. Social media has resolved this issue by adding lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise to the order and swapping the Canadian bacon for regular — a nod to Australia's Deluxe Bacon & Egg McMuffin.

Lettuce has a water content of 96%, so it's only natural that this vegetable will make your McMuffin extra juicy, as well as give it some texture and a tiny bit of bitterness that offsets the richness of the other ingredients. Tomatoes' water content is slightly under that of lettuce, and their sweet and slightly tangy umami adds an extra flavor element to your breakfast sandwich. The mayonnaise, on the other hand, brings a lot of creaminess and is the sauce that your Egg McMuffin is missing. Altogether, these modifications only add $0.65 to your order, bringing it to around $6.14, depending on the location. However, you can save a bit of money if you just keep the Canadian bacon in your sandwich instead of replacing it with bacon.

You can give this juicy treatment to other breakfast sandwiches at McDonald's, too.

You can create a sort of breakfast BLT with this hack, but you don't need to include the bacon if you don't want to go that route. You can also add lettuce, tomato, and mayo when ordering a Sausage McMuffin with Egg and save over a dollar. For an even juicier sandwich, you can take inspiration from the Quarter Pounder with Cheese Deluxe and add pickles, onions, ketchup, and mustard along with the other veggies to your McMuffin. An extra slice of cheese is optional but highly recommended. Or you can have a more pared-down experience by mimicking a classic McDonald's cheeseburger with just ketchup, mustard, pickles, and onions.

If you don't want eggs and want to save significantly more money, just order a Sausage McMuffin and add the veggies and condiments you want to it, and you get a juicy breakfast sandwich for under $3, even if you opt for replacing the sausage patty with bacon. Trying to make the same sandwich with a plain English muffin, however, will bring you closer to the $5 mark. If you know the McDonald's menu well, though, then you know that not all the breakfast sammies are made with these muffins.

Bagel sandwiches can also benefit from some juiciness to contrast the denser bread in these breakfast specialties. You can start with a plain bagel and add bacon and veggies to make a simple BLT or start with an existing sandwich, like the Steak, Egg, & Cheese Bagel, for a heartier meal. The beautiful thing about all these tips is that they serve as great options for a drive-thru brunch, but if you want the ultimate brunch experience, order the McBrunch Burger (a Double Cheeseburger topped with egg, bacon, and a hash brown) and request to add veggies and condiments to make it juicy.
