Although lagers have dominated American beer sales for decades, brand preferences come and go. From the downfall of once-classic Schlitz beer to the newfound popularity of Mexican-style lagers, every generation carries its own brand preferences. For Gen X drinkers — meaning those born roughly between 1965 and 1980 — the most popular label in 2026 is Blue Moon, according to a YouGov report.

An unfiltered Belgian-style wheat ale, Blue Moon comes in at 5.4% ABV, boasting a sweet, citrusy, and lightly spiced profile — the brew's made with coriander and orange peel. The beloved wheat beer is perhaps best-known for its orange slice garnish, a serving tradition popularized by creator Keith Villa.

Approachable and easy-to-drink, widely distributed, yet distinct from more established lagers, Blue Moon found its own pocket in the American beer market. Yet despite its marketing as a standalone craft beer, the brew is made by MillerCoors in the U.S. — the brewery behind popular beers like Miller Lite and High Life. So, not an independent brewery nor an import, Blue Moon is instead a unique big-brand wheat beer that bills itself as a craft brewer with a dedicated following.

The rise of Blue Moon beer among Gen X drinkers

Blue Moon launched on shelves in 1995, making its debut a few years too early for younger Gen X drinkers to enjoy. The beer was first created at Coors-backed Sandlot Brewery, which operated out of the Coors baseball field in Denver, Colorado. Initially, this Belgian-inspired beer was sold only at the baseball field, quickly garnering a positive reception. Only about a year later, Coors ramped up Blue Moon distribution to 22 states. Brewing operations relocated to larger breweries, and a large marketing campaign followed.

In the decades since, Blue Moon has expanded to nationwide distribution, winning over a generation of drinkers. Gen X is big on sports – the MLB is especially beloved among this generation. The wheat beer continues its strong baseball ties, frequently sold alongside baseball stadium food. Not to mention, Coors reinforces the brew's popularity on the golf course, marketing with golf professionals. And Blue Moon has fostered celebrity partnerships with the likes of Colin Jost – longtime writer for Gen X favorite "SNL".

All the while, the brand has adjusted with modern drinking trends, releasing a non-alcoholic beer (even if it didn't make our list of top non-alcoholic beers), as well as versions with various flavors. Such cultural positioning combined with its signature taste has cemented Blue Moon's generational ties, making it a continued favorite in 2026.
