How Much McDonald's Chicken Nuggets Cost In The '80s
As much as McDonald's and its burgers helped create the fast food industry as we know it, the chain also revolutionized the poultry game with its phenomenally successful Chicken McNuggets. Even as countless fast food items and trends have come and gone since their 1983 debut, they remain an iconic cornerstone of Mickey D's menu — but we can see how their 1980s prices compare to today by using two McDonald's menu board photos from the decade on Reddit and Facebook, along with an inflation calculator. One photo can be pegged to approximately 1984 and the other to around 1988, based on items that are and aren't listed, like the long-lost McDLT.
Looking only at the 6- and 20-piece servings, since the era's 9-count no longer exists, the 6-piece was $1.30 on the circa-1984 menu, which converts to $4.26 in 2026, and the 20-piece was $3.90, which equates to $12.78. For the 1988 menu, the $1.39 6-count becomes $4.01, and the $3.99 20-piece adjusts to $11.52. Using August 2026 prices at a Cleveland location, the 6-piece nugget is $3.79, and the 20-count is $10.49, which are both cheaper than the adjusted '80s amounts.
Doing the same thing for comparison with the flagship Big Mac, it was $1.35 on the earlier menu, which adjusts to $4.42, and $1.45 on the later one, which becomes $4.18. Its 2026 cost is $6.49, so it's significantly more expensive now, the opposite of the McNuggets.
McNugget ingredients, sauce lineups, and sizes have evolved over time
Chicken McNuggets have gone through some changes since they first came on the scene. While they still have the same four bone (or bow), ball, bell, and boot shapes, McDonald's switched them to all-white meat in 2003 from the previous combination of white and dark chicken meat. Ahead of battering the chicken pieces for frying, extra flavor is infused with a marinade that also aids in preserving their shapes. The chain additionally removed all artificial preservatives from them in 2016 and introduced Spicy Chicken McNuggets in 2020, which occasionally return.
There were initially only four sauces for the McNuggets: Sweet & Sour, Honey, Barbecue, and Hot Mustard. After many different ones appeared over the years, Sweet & Sour and Honey are still around, as well as Tangy Barbeque. At the time of writing, other current sauces are Spicy Buffalo, Honey Mustard, Creamy Chili McCrispy Strip Dip, and Creamy Ranch. Ordering extra sauce at McDonald's costs, on average, around 25 to 39 cents per container.
A change that some customers have claimed is happening in recent years is that McNuggets are shrinking. A TikTok user and former McDonald's corporate chef weighed in on the charge back in 2024, and agreed that the pieces did look smaller. The user also suggested there was more shelling, which is when there's space between the chicken and its coating.
