20 Of The World's Top Chefs Are Gathering For A Cause: To Save The Oceans
Ferran Adrià. Joan Roca. Alex Atala. Daniel Humm. Gastón Acurio. Enrique Olvera. Grant Achatz. On Tuesday, March 17, these chefs, representing some of the world's best restaurants, will join 13 others at an event in San Sebastián, Spain. But the star-studded gathering is not to mark a new restaurant opening or to attend some high-priced food festival. It is to announce the chefs' commitment to Oceana's global campaign, Save the Oceans: Feed the World.
So what is Oceana? Founded in 2001, the organization campaigns worldwide to make our oceans as rich and healthy as they once were. By achieving policy victories in the countries that govern much of the world's marine life, Oceana makes oceans more biodiverse and abundant. Currently the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation, Oceana estimates that if proven policy changes stop overfishing, limit bycatch and protect habitat in top seafood-producing countries, there would still be enough seafood to provide one billion people a healthy seafood meal every day.
The event — to be held at the Basque Culinary Centre — will open with a premiere screening of the short film "The Perfect Protein" by Jorge Martínez, a documentary that features the chefs discussing their support of ocean conservation and passion for the sea and its seafood. Oceana CEO Andrew Sharpless will then release a special digital edition of his book, The Perfect Protein, that includes sustainable seafood recipes from participating chefs. After remarks from Sharpless, the chefs will take part in an open Q&A with the audience. For more information — and to view a documentary preview — visit the event's website.
