One day in our conference room up in the sky, we got to talking about food cultures we all loved but wanted to know more about. With that, the idea of Around The World In 5 Editors was born. Each day this week, one of the editors breaks in with a lineup of stories, recipes, interviews and personal essays dedicated to their respective country. In honor of today’s focus on Israeli cuisine, here is a video detailing the country's best junk food.
If you think about the foods most commonly associated with Israel, chances are that falafel, hummus and shawarma are some of the first to come to mind. Lesser known is a surprisingly strong selection of chocolatey sweets and cheesy snacks native to the country, many of which are available in the United States.
In a post to her video blog Seri0usly Yours, YouTube user Shira – along with her sisters – details a list of her 10 favorite Israeli junk foods. The choices are diverse – from pretzels to “smile cookies” to a marshmallow-based treat that is a common conversation starter. Take a look at the video below and let us know if you’ve tried any of these delicacies. Or, if you have, tell us if the sisters got it right.
