Beer Talk: Have You Been Drinking IPA From The Wrong Glass?
If you've been drinking IPA from your common straight-walled pint glass, then you've been missing out on some of the characteristics that separate India Pale Ale from other types of beer — most notably hoppiness and aromatic profiles. That's the premise behind new IPA glassware from German glassware giant Spiegelau, which enlisted Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head and Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada breweries to partner on the project.
Available this May for $25 per pair, the Spiegelau IPA glass features a ridged base that aerates the beer as it tips forward, helping to open up an IPA's crisp aromatics. The curved mid-section and smaller mouth help point the aromatics in the right direction: your nose. IPA aromatics can include citrus, fruity, grassy and floral notes, and toasted, nutty characteristics surface too, depending on who's been brewing it.
