Word Of The Day: Nacre
Remember when you learned where pearls come from? Forget everything, they've been feeding you lies. And hopefully, oysters. But not the kind that produce nacre.
Nacre is the very hard, durable and irridescent substance produced by some mollusks, including pearl oysters (not the oysters we eat). Pearls are formed from many consecutive layers of this secreted substance not to protect from an irritating grain of sand, but by a much more irritating tiny parasite.
