The 8 Best Things I Ate In Capri This Summer
Nestled in the Gulf of Naples is the breathtaking island of Capri, a playground for the rich and famous. And lovers of very good things to eat. Since the early 19th century, the stunning coves and crystal clear beaches have attracted poets, artists, writers and actors. But the island is also known for its fresh seafood, and of course its namesake salad: Insalata Caprese. (Capri is also known for growing plump tomatoes, fragrant basil and for producing some of the best olive oil in Italy, so of course the Caprese makes perfect sense.) Here are some of the best things I ate during a weeklong visit.
Fiori di Zucca Ripieni – Fried, yet delicate, zucchini flowers stuffed with salty anchovies and sweet, creamy ricotta.
Tubettoni con cozze – Housemade pasta with mussels, cherry tomatoes and parsley.
Insalata Caprese – The original. Flavorful tomatoes, creamy mozzarella and crisp basil with a dash of fruity olive oil.
Linguine ai Frutti di Mare – Spoon and forked required as each bite of linguine is jam-packed with more seafood than physically possible to pack onto a single utinsil.
Torta Caprese – A rich, yet airy traditional chocolate-almond cake native to Capri.
Rizzio – A few steps from the stunning Grotto Azzurra, perched atop a mountain is Il Riccio, a seafood restaurant that serves bright orange jewel-like sea urchin (rizzio) that explodes with sweet and creamy yet briny ocean goodness.
Arancini – Deep fried risotto balls oozing with melted cheese and buttery mushrooms.
Buonocore Gelateria – One of Capri's most celebrated establishments, Buonocore Gelateria, is an ice-cream shop that makes fresh, crispy waffle cones that you will smell before you even spot the place.
