Word Of The Day: Winnowing

Winnowing, the process of separating grain from chaff, dates back to ancient times. It involves...or should we say involved throwing grain into the air so that the wind blew away the lighter chaff, allowing only the heavier grain to remain.

Various techniques and tools exist to remove chaff, including the winnowing fan (a basket that is shaken to seperate the chaff) and the winnowing fork or shovel. Or, you know, you could succumb to the modern marvel that is the thresher.
