Van's Recalls Gluten-Free Waffles Over Potential Wheat Contamination

On July 3, 2023, Van's International Foods announced a voluntary recall for its Gluten Free Original Waffles due to potential wheat contamination, something that can potentially cause severe allergic reactions. However, as of July 5, 2023, no aforementioned reactions have been reported to the FDA or Van's International Foods.

Not all Van's Gluten Free Original Waffles are being recalled either, nor are any other waffle products. Customers only need to dispose of ones with an expiration date of 1/19/2024 with Lot Code #UW40193L. This can be found on the side of the box, however, for extra caution, the FDA advises all customers to contact their store of purchase to confirm the Lot Code matches with the products that have been voluntarily recalled.

Customers can also return their products for full refunds. Van's Gluten Free Original Waffles, as well as the brand's other products, are found in large retailers across mainly the United States and Canada.

What to do if you bought the recalled product

Those who are concerned that their product may have been contaminated and cannot find the expiration date or the Lot Code can visit Van's International Foods website or call the company's Consumer Affairs line at 1-800-323-7117. According to the FDA, the mistake that caused the recall occurred when a selection of Van's Gluten Free Original Waffles accidentally got put on a pallet intended for other products that contain wheat. The FDA also stated that very few Van's Gluten Free Original Waffles were sorted with products containing wheat and that the recall was called with "in an abundance of caution."

It's no surprise that Van's is taking this potential contamination seriously because looking at its website, it's clear that the company prides itself on being transparent with the ingredient lists for its products. If you do have a gluten or wheat allergy and experience an allergic reaction after consuming one of these recalled products, call 9-1-1 or your emergency hotline to get proper help.
