Costco's New Mango Smoothie Has Shoppers Seriously Divided
Costco's mango smoothie was first mentioned at the Annual Meeting of the Shareholders of Costco Wholesale Corporation in January 2022, and now the company has released the new flavor to all U.S. markets after successfully testing it in Hawaii locations. However, the smoothie, which will be rotated with the Costco favorite, Berry Smoothie, has received mixed reviews online from its customer food critics.
Previously available at Australian food courts, the mango smoothie first appeared on the U.S. mainland a few days ago, and social media users in California and Washington state quickly began commenting on the new item. At $2.99, Costco claims the smoothie contains four servings of fruit and nine grams of fiber and does not contain additional sugar, additives, or preservatives.
Initial reviews on Reddit and TikTok for the frozen beverage were positive, calling the drink refreshing and "the best mango smoothie I've ever had. Pure, undiluted mango goodness," but subsequent posts paint a very different picture.
Customers want Costco to bring back the Berry Smoothie
Unlike Costco's infamous $1.50 hotdog and soda combo, which everyone seems to love, shoppers are divided over the new mango smoothie, with some pleading for Costco to bring back the sweeter berry version. Just as one Costco-centric TikTok user posts how delicious she and her son thought the smoothie was, her feed is blown up with dozens of contradicting comments, saying the mango smoothie is horrible, "had a gross, bitter taste," and "tastes like dirt."
Even Costco employees have chimed in and said they were "let down" by the highly anticipated frozen treat. Although mangos are naturally one of the sweetest fruits grown, a recurring complaint is that the new smoothie isn't sweet enough (and looks like baby food). According to a post in Costco Today magazine in October 2022 via Reddit, there is only one ingredient in its Mango Smoothie, mango, so unhappy customers may be better off buying fresh mango and customizing the Vitamin C-packed smoothie at home.
