3 Events You Should Think About Attending This Weekend
A record cold is blanketing much of the Northeast, and (to us at least) that's just as good a reason as ever to reach for a brew — or choose from one of more than 40 local ones — this weekend in New York City. Or plan your next tropical getaway at the nation's largest travel show, taking place this weekend in Los Angeles. There may be a lot happening on both coasts, but it's the annual jalapeño-eating contest — yes, you read that correctly — in Laredo, Texas that we're most looking forward to this weekend. Here are the three food and drink events you should think about attending over the next few days.
New York City Beer Week
It's time to try some big-time brews in the Big Apple. The ten-day celebration of craft beer throughout New York City features festivals, tastings, menu pairings and beer dinners. The seventh annual festivities are the main focus of the city's Brewers Guild, which advocates for and promotes awareness of its local brewing members, increases the visibility of local beers through marketing, events and consumer education, and fosters a healthy, ethical and growth-focused craft beer industry throughout the city. Events kick off tomorrow, with more than 200 venues participating in around 400 events citywide through March 1. The "Opening Bash" on Saturday afternoon will highlight craft beers from 40 New York State breweries (including 15 from NYC) and include unlimited samples along with light snacks. Head to the official website for information on other events. February 20 – March 1, newyorkcitybrewersguild.com
Los Angeles Travel & Adventure Show
So you love to travel but just can't make up your mind on where to go? Leave it to the experts at the tenth annual Los Angeles Travel & Adventure Show. Visitors flock to the nation's largest travel show for travel inspiration, expert information and cultural interaction. Guests from around the world help with inside information and exclusive travel deals, while representatives from reputable travel companies offer advice on destinations that are the best fits, the best times of the year to go and the top activities to seek out. Celebrity travel speakers and performers from around the globe are also on hand. February 21-22, travelshows.com/losangeles
The Jalapeño Festival
Did you know that there is a month-long celebration every year (for the last 118 years!) in Laredo, Texas that commemorates George Washington's birthday and attracts over 400,000 people? Did you know that one if the main events is a jalapeño festival that's considered one of the country's top eating contests? The annual event has featured impressive musical talent and is no exception this year: multi-Grammy winning Intocable will highlight performers including Los Herederos de Nuevo Leon, La Leyenda, Roger Creager, Los Traileros del Norte, Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights and others. But it will be the heat-seeking participants who will take the spotlight: Will Friday be the day that the 21-year record of 141 jalapeños — contestants have 15 minutes — is broken?
