James Beard Foundation Announces 2013 Leadership Award Recipients
The James Beard Foundation just announced the recipients of its 2013 Leadership Awards, given each year to individuals who work overtime to help support a better food system. This year's group features some familiar faces, such as Wholesome Wave's Gus Schumacher — who we featured during last year's Michel Nischan Week — and professor, author and founder of the informative site foodpolitics.com, Dr. Marion Nestle.
Other honorees are Hal Hamilton, founder and director of Sustainable Food Lab; Cynthia Hayes, Executive Director of the Southeastern African-American Farmers Organic Network (SAAFON); and Ricardo Salvador, Director, Food & Environment Program, Union of Concerned Scientists.
The group will be feted October 21 during the JBF's Food Conference, an annual gathering of luminaries and thinkers who tackle the weighty topics that affect the food world, from genetically modified foods to hunger to pressing agricultural issues.
