Legendary Hoops Coach Phil Jackson Is Serious About Roasting Root Vegetables

Phil Jackson maintains a large garden and chooses to grow leafy greens, not corn or tomatoes.

This weekend The New York Times Magazine published a long profile of 13-time NBA champion Phil Jackson. The biggest news swirling around the piece was Jackson's stance on Michael Jordan vs. Kobe Bryant (he takes Jordan all the way). But with this being Food Republic, we took some interest in the multiple references to Phil Jackson's refined culinary abilities. Specifically, we learn:

  • On May 3, Phil Jackson went shopping for groceries with a Times reporter at high-end Los Angeles grocery store Bristol Farms.
  • Phil Jackson bought a crusty loaf of whole wheat bread, a half dozen eggs, goat's milk yogurt (apparently, goat is the way to go), an artichoke, Swiss chard and heirloom tomatoes (possibly, though unconfirmed).
  • Phil Jackson is really a big fan of roasting vegetables, particularly parsnips, rutabagas and some perfectly globular purple beets.
  • Phil Jackson enjoys a morning smoothie with Swiss chard, along with carrot, apple, protein powder and coconut water.
  • Phil Jackson almost bought a bamboo cutting board, but elected not to.
  • Phil Jackson maintains a large garden and chooses to grow leafy greens, not tomatoes or corn.
