This past Monday in New York City, seven A-list chefs came together to cook at Hearth, in a benefit for A Life Story Foundation, a charity dedicated to the fight against ALS. Unlike the recent Ice Bucket Challenge, this good cause centered around a seven-course menu prepped by Hearth's Marco Canora, Gramercy Tavern's Michael Anthony, Michael Symon, Bill Telepan, Jonathan Benno (Lincoln), and the great pastry chefs Claudia Fleming and Karen Demasco. It had to happen eventually: Alice Waters, the West Coast's poster gal for eating seasonally and locally, will grace New York's similar-minded region this weekend when she cuts the ribbon at the brand new Empire Farm in the Hudson Valley. The ceremony is slated to take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, as part of the Hudson Valley Food Lovers Festival benefitting Farm On! Foundation, with Waters helping roll out the new educational facility. If you're in the New York City area and looking for a fun food event, this should be the ticket.

Last week on a frigid, blustery night, members of the City Harvest Food Council gathered in a private event space at Manhattan hotspot Toro to welcome the organization's new Chairman, chef and restaurateur Geoffrey Zakarian. Included in the crowd of philanthropists and chefs was outgoing chairman and Food Council co-founder Eric Ripert, who will remain on the group's board of directors.
