My grandmother Helga taught me how to cook  — traditional Swedish meatballs before anything else. The meatballs I got for school lunch were always perfectly shaped and just the right size, but never tasted as good as her lumpy, misshapen ones.

With layers of chicken, tarragon, mushrooms, and leek topped by crisp puff pastry, it’s hard not to return for a second helping of chicken pie. Normally we cringe at the idea of a casserole, but any kind of macaroni and cheese is right up our alley. Better Homes and Gardens, famous for...well, better homes and gardens than yours, has a casserole book (aptly named The Ultimate Casseroles Book).
