Politics may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of ice cream, but even this classic dessert is getting a sustainability upgrade from manufacturers like Ben & Jerry's, Blue Marble and Batch. Whether participating in Fair Trade or supporting local dairy farmers, the ice cream industry may prove to become a major player in the sustainable food movement. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is among those at the forefront.

Attempt to make DIY jerky and you may just wake up in a blindingly dense haze that makes your eyes water. At least that’s what happened to SlantShack’s COO David Koretz and his roommate when they forgot about the ultra-spicy jerky dehydrating overnight in their oven. Since then, Koretz has ceased burning meat in his oven and has joined the jerky business professionally, with a twist — SlantShack's jerky has ambitions to help change the food system.

This past Saturday hundreds of food-focused individuals filed into Manhattan's Times Building to hear five hours of TEDx speeches made by leaders in food policy. TEDx (an independently organized offshoot of the TED Talks) is an all-day conference where speakers are invited to make 10-minute speeches relating to the day’s theme. Saturday’s conference, organized by the Glynwood Institute, had the ambitious theme of “Changing the Way We Eat!”
