Emergency Flu Recovery Lunch: Rice And Dal

When nothing else will save you from flu symptoms
Mar 19, 2013 11:31 am

This meal will stay down more or less no matter what's wrong with you. It's vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, pretty much totally hypoallergenic and made of stuff your body wants to hang onto — easily digestible protein in the form of skinless lentils made even more easy to digest by boiling it into oblivion, and nice soft rice. Got the flu? Eat up, you'll need your strength.

Two Brand-New Uses For Idli Batter (Also, What An Idli Is)

South Indian idlis are a dosa's best friend
Jan 30, 2013 12:31 pm

Idlis, steamed fermented rice and lentil dumplings, are a staple of South Indian cuisine. When your culture has been strictly vegetarian for about five thousand or so years, you're going to find some innovative ways to deal with the rice and lentil aspect of your diet, a.k.a most of it. I found two new ways to enjoy them. Also if the Hindu god of fixin' that which ain't broke comes looking for me, I'm not here.

You Only Need One Reason To Buy A Rice Ball Maker

Where to get and how to use rice ball makers
Jan 14, 2013 12:31 pm

Here's what's dangerous: me, a brand-new set of rice ball makers and the fridge after I go food shopping for the week. I think there's a misconception that rice balls are Japanese, period. I mean they are, but once you have the proper tools in place to make them because you learned how to use a rice ball maker on Food Republic, you might just go all fusion on everyone. Here are a few of my favorite ways.

Ideal if you are pressed for time, this braise, a quick, spicy take on Spanish paella, uses the lean meat from the loin, which would dry out if cooked for longer. Marinate the pork ahead if you can. Leftovers can easily be rewarmed in a microwave.

3 Reasons You Should Make One Large Bowl Of Sushi Rice Right Now

And we're not using it for sushi. Interesting...

While I was making rice for Korean food last night, I had to suppress the urge, as always, to turn it into sushi rice. You could argue that sushi rice would go nicely with Korean food, but it's just kind of blasphemous, right? It's probably cause for an international incident. So now that the two pounds of bulgogi I marinated is finally finished, I'm going to town with my favorite non-sushi ways to use sushi rice.

6 Ideas For Dinner Tonight: Homemade Burgers And Buns

These great grilled burgers are always in season
Nov 14, 2012 6:14 pm

Remember Burgers and Fries Week? That wonderful time of the summer when you literally couldn't imagine a better smell than burgers grilling over an open flame, spiked lemonade at the ready? Well it's late fall, which is cold. That's the bad news. The good news is that's no reason not to break out the cast-iron or grill pan, bring the ketchup and mustard to room temperature (hey, burger-crafting is an art) and bake up a batch of our signature homemade burger buns. Also, you have to make your own patties. That's the rule.
