1300 produce items worldwide currently hold price look-up (PLU) codes that are also used to indicate a food's origins. A number 9 in front of the four-digit code lets you know your pear is organic, 8 indicates GMO and conventionally grown produce will fall somewhere in the 3 to 4000's. The California proposal to require GMO labeling is turning into one of the more intriguing political battles of this Presidential election year. As reports surface that agribusiness giant Monsanto has spent upwards of $4 million on advertising to convince the state's residents not to approve the measure.
