James Beard wrote 22 cookbooks and was the first television chef to teach people to actually cook. And as a documentary in the works reasons, James Beard was America’s first foodie. The film does not have a release date yet and features all sorts of famous food people like Jacques Pepin, Jeremiah Tower, Chris Cosentino, Florence Fabricant and book editor Judith Jones, who steals the show in this trailer.

Last night at Lincoln Center in New York City a whole bunch of restaurant professionals gathered to pat each other on the back and celebrate the industry that they (and the collective Food Republic staff) love so much. While we’re of the opinion that “everybody is a winner” in the cutthroat, oftentimes heartbreaking restaurant industry, the James Beard Foundation has been designated as the givers of medals to the best of the best in cooking, bartending, service, design and restaurateur-ing. Last night was the biggest night of the year for the American restaurant world as the James Beard Foundation hosted their annual awards gala at Avery Fisher Hall. As with most awards, the results stirred minor controversy, crushing disappointment and, for those clutching the prized bald man medal at night’s end, a reason to party late.
