GlobALE Warming: The Fall of Summer Beer

Pumpkin beer hits shelves in July? Seriously?
Jul 24, 2014 1:00 pm

It looks like the beer world will be having an exceptionally long summer and equally early winter. I noticed a December expiration date while drinking a summer ale. There's nothing wrong with drinking summer seasonals well into fall, but isn't it brewed "just" for summer? Is this some kind of beerpocalyptic warning with seasonals showing up literally months before the season hits? Why are pumpkin beers flying off the shelves right now? Where exactly are we getting pumpkins in June?

Tired of suspiciously perky cooking show hosts? Us too. Enter Jonny Garrett, our champion at The Craft Beer Channel, which is much more important than the sun-dried tomato channel or fancy...whatever channel. In honor of Germany's recent World Cup win, Garrett whips up three hot dog variations: balsamic beer onions, beer-spiked currywurst sauce and beer mustard, which is not simply beer mixed with mustard. This weekend I’m getting in a car with friends and driving up to the Catskills for a relaxing weekend of camping. There’s really nothing like getting in touch with nature, but whether you're glamping (glamorous camping) or just backpacking it, you shouldn’t brave the wild without awesome brews. Meet The Michigan Brewers Who Made It Cool To Drink Beer All Day

Founders ushers in a new chapter led by a tiny brew

It’s pretty incredible to imagine that Founders Brewing Company, which moved to its new digs in Grand Rapids, MI, in 2008, nearly tanked. According to co-founders Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers, the company's success primarily involved making beer that no one initially thought would sell. Enter Old Dirty Bastard, KBS and the brand's breakout hit, All-Day IPA. I sat down with both partners at their brewery to hear the stories and drink the beer.

Here's when bubbles and foam are bad things
Jun 30, 2014 4:00 pm

Desiring clean glassware for one's craft beer does not make one a beer snob. Clean glasses are a basic right to be included in shelling out $8 for a glass of something thoughtfully and meticulously brewed by dedicated team led by a passionate brewmaster who took the utmost care at every step. But you can tell what's really going on in there — and it could be a lot of gross stuff — by the way bubbles behave in your glass.

Jun 26, 2014 2:00 pm

After a brutal winter and mediocre spring, we’re finally in the thick of summer with some decent beach weather. It’s time for some lighter brews, though as you’ll see, this doesn’t necessarily mean lighter in color or flavor. There may be a few on the list that surprise you, like a big imperial stout from Florida, an Imperial wheat beer and the emergence of radlers and shandies. What else is hiding in this epic list? Right this way, beer fans....
