Fall Preview 2014: 10 Major Restaurants Opening Around The Globe

Shiso bulgogi pork belly skewers sold out within hours at the Mrs. Pound pop-up in Hong Kong earlier this summer.

What a long, strange summer it's been. Ivan Ramen and Mario Batali elevated food courts in New York and Chicago. The vegetable revolution conquered tasting menus and converted carnivores. And, Great Britain taught the world to never wash raw chicken ever again. As fall's cooler temperatures and inevitable pumpkin spice onslaught approaches, we are taking a look at the biggest international openings of the season. From Michelin-starred expansion in Lima to a night market favorite-turned-hip cafe in Hong Kong, here are 10 of the fall's hottest openings worldwide.

1. Heinz Beck | Tokyo

Heinz Beck, who helms Rome's three-Michelin-starred La Pergola, once told Reuters, "It's not Germany or Italy anymore. It's Europe. I'm a European chef, so I can work in the whole of Europe." He also once made us an insanely good bowl of pasta. The German-born chef is turning wagons east this fall, debuting an eponymous spot near Tokyo's Royal Palace canal in November. A casual sister shop and cafe, called Sensi by Heinz Beck, will open alongside the restaurant. 1-1-3 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku; heinzbeck.jp

2. Thoroughbred | Toronto

After their foie gras pop tarts and bison tongue sandwiches set hearts alight at the Toronto Underground Market this market, restaurateur Aaron Zack and former Café Grey chef Ariel Coplan teamed up with Momofuku Toronto GM Robin Kemp to open this sizeable spot in the entertainment district. The three-level venue will officially launch Sept. 2, and will include a ground-level snack bar, second-story restaurant and, eventually, third-floor private-tasting room. 304 Richmond Street West, tbto.ca

3. Hoja Santa | Barcelona

In the past three years, Albert Adria has opened five restaurants, including elBulli-esque tapas bar Tickets, located in the city's Parallel theater district. His most recent restaurant, a casual cantina called Niño Viejo, opened this summer. Now, he is delving further into Mexico's culinary identity with a high-end restaurant named for a Mesoamerican ingredient, whose moniker translates to "holy leaf." Avinguda Mistral 54, en.bcn50.org

4. Tredwell's | London

Michelin-starred Marcus Wareing will trade chef's whites for a power suit this fall, opening a three-level, £1.5 million Seven Dials spot. Opening Sept. 25, Wareing's first foray as a restaurateur will serve casual British fare like crawfish-topped quinoa salads for less than £20 a plate – a considerable departure from the £120 tasting menus at his eponymous restaurant in the Berkley Hotel. Following the Seven Dials launch, Wareing plans to expand into Mayfair and other areas of the city. 4 Upper St. Martin's Lane, marcus-wareing.com

5. Mrs. Pound | Hong Kong

This summer, international heavy-hitters Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and Manhattan's Carbone crew branded outposts in HK. But the fall's hottest debut is straight out of local night market PMQ. In July, PMQ pop-up Mrs. Pound sold out of its shiso bulgogi pork belly skewers, beef rendang poutine and lemongrass meatballs in mere hours. Their brick-and-mortar spot will open in September. No specific address yet, but the undisclosed location will be somewhere in the Sheung Wan neighborhood. facebook.com/MrsPoundHK

6. Los Valientes | Lima, Peru

Gaston Acurio, godfather of modern Peruvian cuisine, is having a good year. He relaunched his 20-year-old, award-winning Astrid & Gaston this past February. Now, he is about to open another restaurant, Los Valientes, in Lima's San Idriso neighborhood. The restaurant, whose name translates to "the brave," will be focused on wood-fired cooking. Av. 7. FINO at Seppeltsfield | Adelaide, Australia

The (wine)Land Down Under's legendary Barossa region will welcome an outpost of Wilunga's FINO restaurant to the Seppeltsfield estate in October. In addition to regional Australian fare, the Barossa location will serve limited-release table wines and Seppeltsfield's Centennial Collection of single vintage, fortified bottles. 8. Clé Dubai | Dubai

Michelin-starred Lebanese-Australian chef Greg Malouf will make his Middle Eastern debut at DIFC's Al Fattan Currency House this fall. A sweeping, terraced affair, Clé Dubai will serve modern Middle Eastern cooking. And, shisha, of course! The spot will also host visual and performing arts exhibitions. 9. Arola | Istanbul

Spanish chef Sergi Arola, whose two-Michelin-starred Madrid restaurant briefly shuttered last summer amid tax troubles, will open an eponymous fine dining restaurant in Istanbul's sparkling new Raffles on Sept. 1. His Catalan menu will focus on more classic flavors than Sergi Arola Gusto in Madrid, which, by the way, is back open for business. Zorlu Center, 3430; raffles.com/istanbul

10. The Coach | Marlow, United Kingdom

Ace gastropubber Tom Kerridge, whose The Hand & Flowers has two Michelin stars and was ranked No. 1 on Restaurant Magazine's 100 Best Restaurants in the UK last fall, will open a second spot in Marlow this November. The casual restaurant will serve British pub grub like smoked haddock kedgeree, rotisserie stuffed quail and moules mariniere with stout and brown bread. 3 West Street
