Gourmet Giftboxes For The Wannabe Jetsetter
Spanish Suitcase delivers Iberian goods with style.
When Tara and Paul DeGeorges visited Spain for their honeymoon in 2010, of course they expected to bring home some tasty souvenirs to supplement the memories of their travels. What they didn't anticipate: conceiving a plan for a fully-fledged business that would deliver some of those same delicious foodstuffs in the form of gourmet giftboxes. And so began Spanish Suitcase.
Focusing just on goods from its namesake country, the freshly launched startup eschews the stale "gift basket" model in the form of cool suitcase-inspired packaging. The boxes, constructed in collaboration with Boxsal, a brand already well-known for its cool, picnic box designs, feature illustrations of the kinds of details and trappings you'd see on beloved old valises. Inside, you'll find selections of Spanish edibles packed according to a specific theme — seafood, sweets, vegetarian diets. You can also create you own mix-and-match box. According to Tara DeGeorges, she and her husband, both "design-obsessed," additionally sought out products that were as attractive for their packaging as they were desired for specific contents inside. An eye-catching red tin of La Chinata smoked paprika, Cuca mussels (see below), for example.
Until you can get yourself to Spain, these packages will spare you the cramped plane ride in economy.
Boxes start at $65 on Spanish Suitcase's website.
