10 Of Our Favorite Movie Food Fights

This Sunday, February 24 is one of the biggest TV nights of the year, when we all (er, most of us) gather around to watch the Academy Awards. We recommend making a bunch of snacks (using our handy Oscars recipes) and firing up that well-stocked bars of yours and make some cocktails for your guests (visit our Recipe section and scroll down for Drinks). Fill out your Oscar pool ballot and enjoy. 

In the days leading up to the Academy Awards, we'll revisit some of our favorite food-in-the-movies moments, starting with 10 of our favorite movie food fights.

10. Blazing Saddles

The scene is quintessential Mel Brooks in that he takes us out of the movie and into the movie making process (see also: Spaceballs, History of the World Part I, Robin Hood: Men In Tights). Clearly inspired by the Three Stooges, Brooks conducts an orchestra of pies flying through the air, leaving no face unsoiled. Watch the clip.

9. PCU 

At a college where no issue is safe from protest, one band of misfits reminds us that four years of higher education is meant to be filled with carefree memories diluted by drugs, alcohol and vegan-bashing. During a peaceful protest against the ingestion of red meat, Dros (played by a much balder Jeremy Piven) and his cohorts rain on their parade. Watch the clip. 

8. Heavyweights 

Reminiscent of a more portly Lord of the Flies, no harmonization of “Kumbaya” around a bonfire could match the camaraderie solidified in this scene. That and making a s’more with your plump bunkmates' oversized nipples. Watch the clip.

7. Dumb and Dumber

Lloyd and Harry have been burned by biting into hot peppers on a dare and want to return the favor. So, as a goof, they plant a few in Mentals’ burger. It’s retaliation with food — tit for tat — pepper for pepper. So most certainly a fight.  Watch the clip.

6. The Public Enemy

Raise your hand if you’ve stabbed a spoon into a grapefruit and gotten a whole eyeful of citric acid. Well, James Cagney just cuts out the middleman of said equation and gives his lover a face full of tasty, but not tasteful, pulp. The 1930’s crime flick focuses on the rise of a young criminal in urban America during the same time period. In this clip Cagney’s character, Tom Powers, cannot handle the frustration with his girlfriend, played by Mae Clark, when she cannot provide alcohol for his morning nip. Smashing a grapefruit into a pretty girl's face is apparently the best option. Watch the clip.

5. Animal House 

This blatant disregard for human safety, demonstrated by the throwing of PLATES of food, and presumably the utensils as well, rather than just the mushy slop itself is the college experience incarnate. Watch the clip.

4. True Romance

Drexl, a scarred, drug-dealing pimp, coolly chows down on Chinese take-out as he negotiates the terms of release for one of his best girls, Alabama. Her new husband, Clarence, is having none of this give and take, offering Drexl his “peace of mind” in the form of an empty envelope. Of course, no pimp daddy is gonna let his money-making ho walk away from his profitable bi’ness, and so it’s time to throw down. To create a momentary distraction, the villain throws his tray of egg rolls and lo mein at our valiant hero — and this is where the food fight ends and the ferocious scuffle begins. Watch the clip.

3. Hook

This imovie is iconic for those who grew up in the '90s — both the phrase itself and the magical food fight that materializes from a make-believe dinner. Imagination turns a “Ghandi-esque” meal into a mouth-watering, family-style feast. And Peter Pan, portrayed by Robin Williams, acts like the biggest kid of all amongst the lovable Lost Boys as they begin to hurl the surplus of provisions across the table. Watch the clip.

2. Rocky 

Sylvester Stallone vs. A Slab of Frozen Meat is a food fight, literally. Slice it (hehe) any way you want, he’s pulverizing his opponent with his fists — and one of them is making Rocky’s knuckles bloody. It’s the Feud with the Food. The Teaser in the Freezer. Stallone and the T-Bone. Watch the clip.

1. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes  

It’s comforting to know that avant-garde pictures such as Snakes on a Plane and Killer Klowns from Outer Space had humble roots. It's hard to imagine how Attack of the Killer Tomatoes ever got a green light, let alone spawned a sequel, and a Saturday morning cartoon series. These angry fruits (for as we all know tomatoes are not vegetables) battle the human race for world domination, leaving ragout and puree in their wake. Sometimes a kamikaze mission for our adversaries, yet always a food fight. Watch the clip
