The Knife And Fork Rule To Remember When Dining In Europe

Most Americans hold their food with their fork in their left hand and cut with their knife in their right hand.

Then they set the knife down and shift the fork over to the right hand to pick the food up and take a bite.

In Europe (particularly in France), this would be considered improper as their custom dictates keeping the fork in the left hand at all times and using your right hand to cut.

While in Europe, keep your utensils in your hands the entire time you're eating and your hands visible at all times. Additionally, when eating with a spoon, use your dominant hand.

Once you’re done, set the fork and knife parallel on the right side of your plate to let your host or waitstaff in a restaurant know that you've finished your meal.
