The Gluten Controversy Surrounding Liquid IV Hydration Packets
Liquid I.V. is an electrolyte drink mix that advertises various health benefits. The product is labeled as "gluten-free," but contradictory test results have sparked controversy.
Results obtained by consumers using home-testing kits on Liquid I.V. samples showed traces of gluten in some flavors, including Apple Pie, Lemon Ginger, Tangerine, and Strawberry.
For individuals with gluten-related disorders (GRDs), such as celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, ingesting even small amounts can lead to severe medical complications.
The FDA stipulates that products labeled "gluten-free" contain less than 20 ppm gluten, raising questions over whether the Unilever-owned brand complies with these regulations.
Despite Liquid I.V.'s assurances and support from the Gluten-Free Watchdog’s lab, which did not find gluten in the product, those with severe GRDs should probably avoid using it.
