The Marconas add enough richness and body to this cilantro pesto that I leave out the cheese. The flavor of the almonds comes through better and the sauce tastes fresher and greener — an exciting accent to a bean soup or an omelet.

blood sausage

Blood sausage is certainly not a new invention. It’s a foodstuff that’s been served around the globe for centuries but, perhaps because of our country’s squeamishness, it’s yet to make inroads into popular cuisine. That’s about to change. In preparation, we’ve compiled a primer on some International varieties of the dark, funky, iron-packed tube steak.

Nov 13, 2012 12:01 pm

Upon entering the recently-opened Macaron Parlour in East Village, everything looks familiar enough. But upon further inspection, you'll discover what sets this bakery apart: the world's first "manly" macarons. We're talking Cheetos, Thai chili and candied bacon.

Caramelized Onion And Beef Loco Moco Recipe

Breakfast has never looked so dinner-like
Nov 2, 2012 3:01 pm

The Hawaiian loco-moco is a seriously rib-sticking breakfast dish of rice topped with hamburger patties, onions and fried eggs. Here’s my simpler, more refined version that works beautifully for lunch or a homey supper. Kids dig right in, and so do adults.

Smashed Shrimp Shumai Recipe

Shumai get "smashed" for your next cocktail party
Nov 1, 2012 4:01 pm

This dish began with a near-disaster. As guests were arriving at a party in Denver, I realized that the water I was going to cook the dumplings in wasn’t going to boil at our high altitude. What to do? I grabbed a paella pan, put it on the grill and added oil. I smashed – flattened – the shumai with a wet palm, then sautéed them until golden and crisp.

My teaching trips to Spain have inspired this combination of Spanish chorizo and shrimp takikomi gohan. I often make a double batch and freeze some for a quick and satisfying lunch. In this recipe, I use wholesome brown rice, but this dish is also very good with polished white rice.

The cult of extreme eating has become surprisingly mainstream. Restaurants themselves have begun to provide the fear factor. Our guide to the world’s scariest restaurants takes you from Midtown Manhattan to Bangkok and beyond. Those with a strong constitution and solid game face might consider booking a table at a haunted Southern mansion, in an Italian prison or 150 feet above city traffic. Just in time for Halloween, it's the world's 6 scariest restaurants!

Everything You Need To Know About The Bialy (Including A Recipe)

The bialy is not a sub-type of bagel, it’s a thing all to itself. Round with a depressed middle filled with cooked onions and sometimes poppy seeds, it is simply baked (bagels are boiled then baked). Purists prefer them straight up, preferably no more than five hours after being pulled from the oven.
