That's because The Oaks Gourmet isn't really a restaurant. It's a marketplace.

In the past few months, Umami Burger and Mendocino Farms have each opened a more upscale version of their concepts in Downtown Los Angeles. Mendocino fired their salvo with Blue Cow Kitchen, a more sophisticated take on their casual shops. With Blue Cow, the Mendocino Farms team took a shot deep into the heart of Umami and introduced their first burger. Lucky for them, it's a good one.

At eat @ cane bay, chef/owner Frank Pugliese offers a make-your-own burger setup that lets you construct a masterpiece from sexy toppings like jalapeno cream cheese, smoked duck chili, and even a slab of seared foie gras. If you want to leave it up to the experts, however, you'll find the Burger of the Month listed on a chalkboard facing the sparkling Cane Bay. This month, they're serving The Elvis, a burger fit for The King.

Too many people spend time trying to figure out what their last meal on earth will be. They should really be trying to figure out what they're going to eat for their first meal in heaven. I know what mine is: the Loco Moco at the Hula Shores restaurant in Hawaii's Hotel Molokai.
