One of my measuring sticks for Mexican restaurants outside of Southern California is the rice, and it’s amazing how many places fail this simple test (the test is unnecessary in Southern Cal; everyone passes pretty much). I just want some rice with some appetizing color and a ton of flavor. Lucky for me, my mom taught me how to make the good stuff back in the day. The recipe, after the jump.

5 Hearty Rice Dishes To Warm You Up

Recipes for warm, meaty rice to eat by the bowlful

A big bag of rice is one of the most versatile ingredients in our pantry. Come winter weather, we're frying it, cooking it with all manners of pork and sausage, topping it with a burger and a fried egg, you get the idea. We're not serving brown rice alongside steamed salmon is what we're saying. We have too many excellent, rib-sticking hearty rice recipes for that right now.

This Is A Game-Changer: Smoked Basmati Rice

A random, awesome supermarket find for lunch
      Nov 18, 2013 12:30 pm

I discovered bags of smoked basmati rice at a random supermarket. I think I actually yelled, like an alarming yell, for my friend to come see what I found. Obviously she was less excited than me, but she's not a food writer with a lunch column to keep fresh. She was still excited though, because basmati rice is obviously the best rice and smoked stuff is obviously superior to unsmoked stuff. Here's what you do with it.

"Dosas are just okay," said nobody, ever. Check out this absolutely pornographic tribute to crispy-chewy South Indian rice and lentil crepes. I don't utter the words "food" and "porn" in the same sentence unless I mean it. Or if it's Wednesday. Hey!

This cookbook was inspired by the award-winning HBO series, Treme, and no offense to Breaking Bad, but we'd rather cook recipes from this show, thanks. Learn simple homestyle recipes for your favorite New Orleans dishes. No Nola cookbook would be complete without a few vibrant (very spicy) Asian dishes, like this fiery peppered hanger steak.

Emergency Flu Recovery Lunch: Rice And Dal

      Mar 19, 2013 11:31 am

This meal will stay down more or less no matter what's wrong with you. It's vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, pretty much totally hypoallergenic and made of stuff your body wants to hang onto — easily digestible protein in the form of skinless lentils made even more easy to digest by boiling it into oblivion, and nice soft rice. Got the flu? Eat up, you'll need your strength.
