This is the first recipe in Crispianity, a weekly column devoted to all foods crispy and crunchy, two of the most underappreciated attributes of a great dish. Unlike the kugels most of us are familiar with from Rosh Hashanah meals or Yom Kippur breakfasts, this one packs a wallop of heat thanks to a pile of black pepper. Don't tackle the Jewish holidays without this sweet, spicy, crunchy comfort food.

The mensches at Shmaltz Brewing Company have crafted a perfect beer for the occasion at their new brewery in Clifton Park, NY. Rejewvenator, as this annual release from their He'Brew line is called, is a combination of Belgian Dubbel ale and Doppelbock lager (known affectionately as a dubbel doppel). It’s been brewed in past years with figs, dates and grapes. This year's edition is awesome. The secret ingredient, after the jump.
