At last night’s James Beard Awards we were posted up in the media room, where somebody thought it would be a good idea to cook bacon for four straight hours. It was in this tight space where we also met a bunch of the winners, including Tory McPhail of the legendary Commander’s Palace in New Orleans.

Last night was the biggest night of the year for the American restaurant world as the James Beard Foundation hosted their annual awards gala at Avery Fisher Hall. As with most awards, the results stirred minor controversy, crushing disappointment and, for those clutching the prized bald man medal at night’s end, a reason to party late.

The annual James Beard Foundation Awards is often called the Oscars of the food world. Though, in reality, it’s more like the combined Oscars, Golden Globes, Grammys, Teen Choice Awards, Independent Spirit, VMAs and NBA All-Star game of the food world. It’s the only game in town and everybody cares about it, particularly the nominated chefs, restaurateurs, sommeliers, restaurant designers, mixologists, cookbook authors and media folk who fly to New York every spring with the hopes of winning some hardware. Tonight is the big night, and we will be there.
