Loki's Quarrel: Beer Infused With Salmon Roe (At Last!)

There's bizarre. Then there's this concoction.
Jan 24, 2013 2:02 pm

This beer cocktail is the brainchild of Marcus Wade at Miami's MC Kitchen. The drink was inspired by Loki, the God of mischief and shape-shifter in Norse mythology. The recipe calls for salmon roe in the bottom of your glass as a garnish, but feel free to add more to the infuser (see above photo with roe layered between the lemons and cucumbers) for an extra punch of savory goodness. Be brave, like Loki. Or maybe we didn't read that fable quite right.

5 Gluten-Free Beers That Are Actually Worth Drinking

Decent gluten-free beer is no myth
Dec 10, 2012 4:01 pm

I know what you’re thinking: Good gluten-free beer is a myth. It’s impossible to replicate a great IPA or lager using alternative ingredients, right? Well, for the past few years I’ve watched a friend cringe at every sip of Redbridge (it’s Anheuser-Busch, no surprise) or Bards (equally not-good) so I took it upon myself to search far and wide for an acceptable alternative: gluten-free beer that tastes like beer. I found these 5 delicious brews.

Thirty years ago, the concept of a craft-beer power ranking system was inconceivable. Back then, there were only a handful of breweries pumping out suds that deviated from the watery-lager norm. Fast-forward to 2012, and there are more than 1,900 breweries in the country — with another 600 or 700 on the way.

In this era of food-safety mania, there is one perishable no one speaks of. Yes, beer can go bad. Fortunately, it usually gets drunk before it can turn. But if you’ve ever cracked open a bottle that somehow managed to languish at the back of your fridge for a few months too many, then you know the horror of skunky suds.

So, how does one avoid such a fate?...

Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA

During my early years in New York City, when I was young, drunk and prone to staying up 'til sunrise, I often found myself at a Greek diner with a phonebook-long menu — well, a phonebook circa 1982.

At that ungodly hour of the morning, focusing my eyes was impossible. All my reptilian brain craved was greasy, meaty grub to insulate my stomach and...

Dogfish Head Conjures Robert Johnson's Ghost

Robert Johnson was not a summery dude. Clouded by mystery and an early death, he made only a handful of recordings, but that high, lonesome voice (though it might not be how he really sounded) and his legendary deal with the devil for guitar-...
