It's been a labor of love for our editors, who've come to appreciate smoke, fire and sauce (Shhh, don't tell our friends in Texas), not to mention marinades, rubs, pre-mixed cocktails, seasonal craft beers. 16 Of The Country's Top Barbecue Masters Are Visiting NYC In June

New York City will play host to some of the nation’s best barbecue at the annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party the weekend of June 7-8. Taking place in Madison Square Park and neighboring streets, the two-day festival will feature 16 of the country’s top pitmasters from a a dozen states.

Our final dinner at this past weekend's Charleston Wine & Food Festival was at the legendary Jim 'n Nick's Bar-B-Q, where pitmasters from the competition barbecue crew Fatback Collective served up a mountain of ribs and pork. We were all a few spiked Cherry Cokes deep when Reggie Turner, Rodney Scott, Dalvin Duncan, Woodrow Washington and Sam Jones took the microphone. Check out the video. These guys can sing!

Here is a map that pulls no punches, and of course it’s from Texas Monthly. TM is a fine magazine that publishes thoughtful "think" pieces and political takedowns that has given the publication a sort of New York magazine of the South reputation. One of the initiatives that sets it apart from other sleepy regional magazines is the editor's obsession with the barbecue of their home state, by and large an all-beef affair. And this map serves as a large middle finger to the rest of the country.
