10 Questions & A Sandwich: Brett Davern Wants To Share A 'Brewski' With Paul Newman

Brett Davern is racing toward his dreams. Well known for his role on MTV's Awkward — which premieres for its fifth and final season August 31 — Davern recently portrayed Carl Wilson in Love & Mercy, a biopic about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. He can currently be seen in The Stanford Prison Experiment, based on the 1971 psychological experiment conducted at Stanford University, in which 24 male students were assigned roles of prisoner and guard in a mock prison.

Favorite theater show?

My all-time favorite would have to be Rent. The music is incredible, and I love the message of love and living for today. I used to live in New York City, and my friends and I would go all the time to try and win the lottery drawing they have for the show. If you win you get to sit in the front row! We won a few times, and those are memories with my friends and family that I will cherish forever.

What's the best way to unwind?

Crack open an ice cold beer (or four) and play Xbox until the wee hours of the morning! Just zoning out. Right now, I am into FIFA and Batman: Arkham Knight.

What's the best song to jam to?

I love all music, and it depends on the mood. If I want to dance, it's Bruno Mars's [Mark Ronson feat. Mars] "Uptown Funk." If I am chilling out, "Yellow Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam. I am a Seattle kid, so basically anything by them is fine by me!

What musician(s) would you see in concert?

Pearl Jam.

What movie can you always rewatch?

Back to the Future. It's a perfect movie. Laughs, adventure, love story, a bit of sci-fi — it's got it all.

If you could attend any event in history, what would you want to witness?

How much time do you have to talk about this one? Geez, wow. I am a huge history buff. Can I be on the moon with Neil and Buzz? That would be awesome!

What's your favorite quote?

"There's a time for daring, and there's a time for caution, and a wise man understands which is called for." Robin Williams as John Keating in the movie Dead Poets Society.

What superpower would you choose?

The ability to fly at any speed and at any altitude.

What's your favorite season?

Football season.

If you could meet one person, living or dead, who would you meet?

I go over this question so often and always have a different answer depending on the day. I'd really like to share a brewski with Paul Newman.

What's in your signature sandwich?

The best sandwich ever is the Godmother from Bay Cities in Santa Monica, period. It's Genoa salami, prosciutto, mortadella, capicola, ham and provolone. Get it with "the works," which is mayo, mustard, Italian dressing, onions, pickles, lettuce and pepper relish, on beautiful, crusty Italian bread. (I did that from memory, by the way.) Actually, I am glad that's the last question, because I have to go get one of those right now!
