Cook the burger

Fire up the grill outside or follow our expert guide to cooking a perfect burger in a cast-iron skillet. Place the cheese on top once your burger is cooked to your liking, then remove the skillet from the heat and allow the burger to rest and cheese to melt for a minute.

Prepare the bun
Prepare the bun

While the burger is resting and cheese is melting, slice the bun if it needs slicing and separate the halves. Now you're ready to start building your burger.

Add the patty

Place the patty with melted cheese on the bottom bun.

Drag it through the garden

Drag it through the garden! That's kitchen slang for "add the vegetables," so layer on a couple of lettuce leaves and slices of tomato.

Finish the toppings
Finish the toppings

Finish the burger off with sliced red onions and pickles, if that's how you take your burger. Not only do the flavors of the vegetables enhance the texture of the burger, the freshness of the produce, bite of the onion and tang from the pickle round out the whole experience.

Add condiments

Add condiments. Ketchup is the classic in this case, but a squirt of mustard or mayo only adds extra flavor.

Place the top bun on your creation and serve immediately with fries or chips. Or maybe even a salad.
