Design Meme: Living, Breathing Dining Room Tables
Talk about going green: these tables support plants
Well this is something we weren't expecting. Dining room tables tend to be modern, contemporary or classic, but we've dug up five that are best classified as green. Why? Well, they have things growing in, on, or around them for one thing. For another, some of these tables can be used as indoor gardens or to conserve energy. They also represent a very cool, if odd concept that could lead you to have your significant other asking, "Honey, did you remember to water the dining room table?"
This metal and English oak table from London-based design company JAILmake has four plantable trellises to grow beans, tomatoes and herbs. Guests can pick their own tomatoes and drop them into a salad while they sit around the table!
Brooklyn-based designer Peter Buley always dreamed of having an indoor garden but never had the space. So, he created a kitchen table with a hydroponic grow system. The table is made of walnut and steel and is equipped with a small light system so you don't need to worry about the sunshine.
The VoltPot coffee table harvests dirt power to recharge portable gadgets. The table serves as a planter and gadget charger, harvesting the power of dirt using a built-in microbial fuel cell to provide enough energy to charge your portable gadgets. Genius.
This table, designed by architecture student Emily Wettstein, is made from reclaimed walnut and steel with a removable planter that can hold a variety of plants.
Designer Judy Hoysak created this "Vegetable Furniture" table that functions both as furniture and as a space to grow a garden of edible greens. The table is a self-watering planter complete with T-5 fluorescent plant grow lights and a structure made from Plyboo Strand and aluminum.
