The Wish List: A Tribute To Serge Gainsbourg
"We miss you Serge, life is such a bore."
While taking a stroll on a lazy sunny, summer Sunday in Paris a couple months ago, I came across the apartment where Serge Gainsbourg used to live and noticed that someone had scribbled "we miss you Serge, life is such a bore," in tiny block letters on the building's façade. The quote stuck with me as I wandered around Saint-Germain that afternoon, eventually arriving at the iconic Café de Flore for a midday rendez-vous. As I people-watched while sipping my apéritif, I thought about Serge, and slipped into revery. The iconic French singer, poet, artist and actor who famously dated Bridgitte Bardot and Jane Birkin in the '60s and '70s was known as a rogue, but his panache and charm, along with tremendous musical talent, made him one of the style icons of his time.
Gainsbourg transcended the boundaries of celebrity, and even 21 years after his death, he continues to wield an influence over artists and musicians all over the world. We really do miss you, Serge.
In honor of Monsieur Gainsbourg, here are some items for inspiration for a timeless look. He was one of the most stylish men in history, so take note. The often overused phrase je nais sais quoi, was coined for Gainsbourg. His style was classic chic with a sexy, disheveled flair. If you don't know who Serge Gainsbourg is, just slip back into those tattered sweat pants and go on your way.
