If you’re the type of person who still desires the crunchiest possible chicken fingers (no judgment there), panko might mean something to you. These tasty Japanese breadcrumbs could also be an ingredient for your next mac and cheese adventure.

Several things set panko aside from your basic breadcrumbs. Panko is coarser — the crumbs resemble little jagged flakes — creating an airy breading for fried foods. As if a crunchy, airy breading wasn't good enough, a large amount of the frying grease drains from a panko crust, resulting in a less heavy and oily finished product.
