Word of the Day: Folate
Building up your kitchen vocab arsenal
If you’re an obsessive cereal box nutrition facts reader you may just be familiar with the term folate. Not ringing a bell? Try folic acid. Both are a form of the all important Vitamin B.
When the natural vitamin folate is used as an additive in foods (bread, grains, breakfast cereal) or taken as a supplement, it is called folic acid. But you can find folate au naturel in leafy greens fruits and dried beans. Vitamin B might not be as glamorous as some of its counterparts (namely C), but it’s essential to blood cell production to prevent anemia and DNA repair. Yet another reason to eat your spinach.
