Top 5 Jack Nicholson Food Scenes
A countdown of Jacked-up cinematic food encounters
Long before Carmelo Anthony decided it was OK to wear sunglasses in a nightclub, Jack Nicholson was rocking shades at the Oscars. That’s O.G. – or original gangsta’ if you’re not into the whole brevity thing. It’s been a long road for the 3-time Academy Award winning actor, starting on the back of a motorcycle in Easy Rider. His smile, speech patterns, enormous forehead and memorable quotes have made him one of the biggest movie stars of all time. Frankly, if you haven’t even attempted a Nicholson impression once in your life, then you don’t know Jack. In tribute to a true Hollywood icon – I present the “Top 5 Jacked Up Food Scenes.” And yes, it includes the one you've been waiting for...
05. The Witches of Eastwick
In Jack’s interpretation of the devil himself, he’s at his pimp-iest, juggling the needs and desires of Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. The three ladies over-indulge in an offering of cherries — pit-less and sexually stimulating — and sidestep all the negative repercussions of their gluttonous feasting. They blindly leave those after-effects for the wet blanket neighbor played by Veronica Cartwright. Now our guy doesn’t have a abundance of screen time in this scene, yet whenever I think back to it I always remember his sinister grin as the God-fearing bitch vomits cherry upon cherry, pits and all.
04. As Good As It Gets
Socially awkward Jack is just as much fun as unnecessarily-angry Jack and crazy-in-an-isolated-hotel Jack. Impatient and unwilling to conform to restaurant norms, the OCD-plagued author shouts his dinner hard shell crab order across a crowded room. Luckily, his date is already aware of his ailment, and lets it slide – in any other circumstance that’s a deal breaker. Conversation quickly elevates from small talk to medium talk and sexual chemistry thrives in the embarrassing and unfiltered environment created by one Melvin Udall.
03. A Few Good Men
Forgotten amidst a sea of “You can’t handle the truth!’”s, the first intimidating conversation with Colonel Jessep takes place over lunch, near the sea, at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Writer Aaron Sorkin slips a condescending anecdote about blowjobs from superior officers right in the meat of the scene, when all the audience wants to know about is the infamous Code Red. Exchanging pleasantries over coffee, or tea even, sounds civilized. Tom Cruise finds himself a bit too comfortable in this environment and forgets his P’s and Q’s when asking for some transfer papers for his file – that’s when Jack revs up the heat, metaphorically takes the white-uniformed Lt. Daniel Kaffee over his knee, and teaches him a thing or two about manners.
02. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Is gum food? Technically, no. But you put it in your mouth and chew. Some people even swallow. I’ve heard of good gum karma before – the practice of responsibly spitting out a used piece in a trash receptacle to ensure that the world’s collective energy will allow your shoes to go gum-free – but getting a deaf and dumb Native American to break his vow of silence is on a-whole-nother-level! A turning point for Mac and his escape plans, Juicy Fruit is the catalyst for a trouble-making duo in realizing their full potential as partners in crime.
01. Five Easy Pieces
When you think of Jack in regards to food, the chicken salad scene is in the forefront for anyone who’s had the pleasure of watching Five Easy Pieces. What’s the reason for the “no substitutions” policy on menus? Especially when it comes to something as simple as toast? Toast! Out-witting reason, Jack simply orders a chicken salad sandwich – hold the mayo, butter and lettuce…and the chicken salad…equaling two pieces of toast in the equation. Of course they don’t take too kindly to sass at this local roadside diner, especially from no wise-ass, jive-talking Oscar winners. If you ever played the Joker and you want toast, get the hell out.
